Maryland Car
Insurance
Maryland law requires that all motor vehicles registered in
Maryland be insured by a company licensed in Maryland and carry coverage of $20,000 for bodily injury per person,
$40,000 for bodily injury for two or more people, and $15,000 for property damage.
The basic Car Insurance Requirements in Maryland are as
follows:
Liability Insurance is a minimum requirement and a low cost
car insurance option as long as the vehicle is not financed.
The liability Minimums are 20/40/15 (Bodily Injury and
Property Damage)
20/40/15 Explained:
The first 20 represents $20,000, the maximum coverage for one
person's injuries, $40,000 for the total coverage for all injuries sustained in one incident and last but not least
$15,000 for the property damage maximum coverage amount.
Maryland Automobile Insurance Laws:
Uninsured Vehicle Owners Could:
* Lose license plates and vehicle
registration privileges.
* Pay uninsured motorist penalty fees for each lapse of insurance -
$150 for the first 30 days, $7 for each day thereafter.
* Pay a restoration fee of up to $25 for a vehicle's
registration.
* Be prohibited from registering any future vehicles until all
insurance violations are cleared.
* Be prohibited from renewing a suspended registration until all
insurance violations are cleared.
* Have license plates confiscated by an authorized tag recovery
agent, once a registration suspension is in effect.
* Pay a fine of up to $1,000 and/or one year imprisonment for
providing false evidence of insurance.
Note: These penalties are in addition to any fines or
penalties imposed by a court of law.Insurance proof is a requirement at registration and of course after an
accident.
When the MVA requests a proof of insurance, a MD Insurance
Certification (FR-19) is the only acceptable form of verification. The ID card and actual policy are not
acceptable.
Options include comprehensive and collision coverage, if
there's no lien on the vehicle. Comprehensive insurance provides protection against vehicle theft or physical
damage not caused by a collision. Collision insurance pays a maximum of the book value for any damage to the
vehicle caused by a collision. (Deductible amounts apply first.)
