Idaho Car Insurance
All
motorized vehicles operated on Idaho roadways, whether
registered or not, must carry liability insurance providing the
following minimum coverage:
$25,000 for injury or death of one person
$50,000 for injury or death
of two or more people
$15,000 for property
damage.
When you
register your vehicle, you must sign a statement certifying
that the vehicle is and will be insured as required by Sections
49-117(18), and 49-1229, Idaho Code. All vehicles registered or
operated in ID are required to be covered by a liability
insurance policy at all times.
While it
is not required it is recommended that all motorists carry
comprehensive and collision insurance. This will pay for the
damage to the vehicle of the insured in an accident that they
are responsible for up to the blue book value of the vehicle.
In the event that the cost of repairs exceeds the value of the
vehicle it will be “totaled” and the value awarded in cash to
the owner rather than paid out in repairs.
Idaho does
not require that motorists possess uninsured or underinsured
motorist insurance; however, as not all states require their
drivers to carry liability this is a wise addition to every
insurance policy. Uninsured and underinsured insurance will
provide for the payment of medical expenses and vehicle repair
in the event that the insured is struck by a vehicle whose
driver does not possess insurance, whose insurance is
insufficient to cover the costs incurred, or if the insured is
involved in a hit and run.
You are
not required to provide proof of insurance at the time you
register or re-register your vehicle. However, your insurer can
give you a certified statement of liability insurance
coverage (SR-22 certificate) should the Idaho DMV decide you
must show actual proof if you do not have a "proof of insurance
card" handy.
This
certificate acts as "proof of financial responsibility" should
you cause personal injury or death or property damage to
another person or people. The insurance must cover the duration
of the annual registration, so check that your insurance
company provides the complete and appropriate dates of
coverage.
Note: State Car Insurance regulations
can change. Please check with your state's Motor
Vehicle Department for the most current
regulations.
